The Oscrent Mechanical Seal - Boat Propeller shaft seal
Headland Engineering manufactures the Oscrent Mechanical Seal which is a precision-engineered component, designed to provide a watertight seal in marine applications. Preventing water around the rotating shafts. The seal is specifically designed to accommodate axial and radial movement, as well as vibrations, making it suitable for use in environments where alignments and load conditions may vary. The mechanical seal operates by maintaining consistent contact between the flat faces of a rotating stainless steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange, effectively compensating for shaft movement caused by the propeller thrust.
Precision Engineered. Performance Guaranteed.
Components
Rubber bellow
The rubber bellows are made from high quality rubber in ISO certified factory in Australia and is designed with only hose clamps on one side of the bellow and a SS housing on the other side. The rubber bellow has a unique interlocking feature matching the carbon stator and a hole for assembly of the plumbing fitting that goes through the carbon stator and the SS housing thereby providing a very rigid assembly which can be compressed and perform with excellence in a marine environment. This unique arrangement is first of its kind in the world. The bellow can easily be secured on a shaft log or stern tube with clamps and is easily installed on propeller shaft for boats
Rotor
- The rotor is made out of 316L stainless steel and inserted with a ceramic machined to fit the 316 SS rotor and this ceramic facing is classified as a high performance, non-oxide technical ceramic known for its exceptional mechanical, thermal, chemical and electrical properties. Also, maintains its strength and stability under high temperatures and is polished to match the carbon stator and provide a long lasting leak resistant machined surface and does not wear or rust like conventional sealing systems using only SS rotors/ facing. It is secured on the shaft using 3 set screws positioned at 120 degrees angle for maximum holding power. The stainless steel+ ceramic rotor further polishes the carbon stator during the initial hours of operations. The seal is also provided with half moon clamps and is recommend to be used to secure the sealing rotor in operation and avoid any in service slippage. The rotor is installed on the propeller shafts used in boats with 3 screws and locks in place once the bellow is compressed.
Carbon Stator
The high density, resin impregnated carbon stator is manufactured and polished to highest standards to provide an excellent sealing face in combination with the ceramic facing and is a unique design with interlocking feature that locks in with the rubber below which sits inside a first of its kind SS housing and the plumbing fitting along with the bellow and carbon assembly forms a versatile combination to hold all parts in place while providing an excellent sealing system in a marine environment. This feature is a unique feature and first of its kind in the marine industry. The propeller shaft is free to move inside the bore of the stator due to enough clearance between the propeller shaft and the carbon stator bore.
Stainless Steel Housing
The housing is made from SS 316 material and features cut out sections to reduce weight and aid with any heat loss while providing protection to the carbon stator from elements and also holds the carbon stator and bellow assembly together in a firm assembly. The housing is assembled in the factory and sits supported in the extruded section of the bellow. This is also a first of its kind design and is a unique feature of our product.
Shaft Collar
The seal is provided with shaft collar/ half moon clamps which can be used with the seal mounted against the rotor for extra protection against any slippage of the rotor . These clamps are manufactured from SS 316 and can be supplied with the seal or on order as per customers requirements. The clamps are tightened on the propeller shaft with two screws and secures the propeller shaft seal in place.

Our Mechanical Propeller Shaft Seal is precision-engineered and made in Australia to deliver superior reliability, durability, and performance in demanding marine environments.
Advanced Engineering & Design
Unlike conventional bellows-type mechanical seals available on the market, our design features an overall length approximately 20 mm shorter, allowing for improved installation flexibility in confined spaces while maintaining optimal sealing performance.
A key innovation is the elimination of external hose clamps on one side, replaced with a purpose-engineered stainless steel fitting. integrated with a plumbing-grade connection system. This provides:
• A more secure and stable connection
• Reduced risk of clamp-related failure
• Cleaner installation and improved long-term reliability
Load Capacity Testing for Carbon Stator
Premium Materials & Performance
To ensure exceptional wear resistance and extended service life, our seal is supplied with a optional ceramic rotor face, replacing traditional stainless steel mating surfaces. Combined with a high-grade carbon face, these pairing delivers:
• Superior friction characteristics
• Improved heat resistance
• Reduced wear over time
• Enhanced sealing integrity under load
. better corrosion resistant rotor
Components are rigorously tested in a NATA-certified laboratory.
- Quality Assured – Made in Australia • Engineered for demanding marine applications • Independently tested and verified • designed and Precision manufactured in Australia • Quality assured for long-term performance
- Our propeller shaft mechanical seal is not simply a replacement component — it is a refined engineering solution designed to exceed the performance of standard bellows-type seals in the market. For technical specifications or installation guidance, please contact our engineering team.
